ISSUE FOUR News page Peat or Peat free A staggering amount of peat is still being used in the horticultural world today, and many people still think it is a renewable substance. It would properly take a 1000 years to replace what we use in 1 year so the answer is to find a substitute. The trees for free nursery as been peat free for the last 10 years, in the early days it was hard to find a product that was good enough to germinate seeds and then grow the plants on. In the end we settled on 2 products which we found almost equally as good. The best was J Arthur Bowers peat free compost, it has a good peaty texture and seems to hold nutrients well for growing on. A close second was B&Q's own brand on peat free compost so if you cannot get one you can use the other and they are both reasonable priced. The Which report released their trails results on peat free composts and stated on Gardeners world that the 2 they would recommend where J Arthur Bowers and B&Q's brand.
