Tending Loosening Clearing

Will your tree be thirsty this summer

Young trees often die from lack of water, particularly if they have compete with surrounding grass and weeds which draw much water from the soil.
Cutting grass just makes it grow more vigorously. If lawnmowers and strimmers hit trees they will damage the bark, which can lead to the death of the tree.
The easy solution is to remove all grass and weeds for at least 0.5m radius around each tree. Do this by mulching - ensuring the soil is moist, then cover the area with a mulch mat or cut up squares of old carpet. Alternatively, use bark or composted woody material and top up when necessary, or regularly pull up grass and weeds by hand. Weedkillers can damage trees if used carelessly, and cannot be used outside your own land without a certificate.
